Founder Joseph Stewart (Joe) is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. Growing up he spent most of his summers at his Grandfather's cabin in the gorgeous Jemez Mountains. While there was always plenty of firewood to be cut, fence to be fixed, and maintenance on the house there was always time to go fishing, hiking, and exploring in surrounding Santa Fe National Forest. Joe and his wife Koren took over ownership of the cabin in 2000 and passed on the love of the area to their two sons.
Joe's other passion growing up was the love to ride motorcycles. At age 11 Joe decided he wanted a dirt bike and began to save his money he made by doing yardwork and any other work his neighbors needed. He eventually saved up enough money to buy a 1980 YZ 80 from the local dealership Bobby J's Yamaha. In 1989 Joe's brother convinced him to enter a local desert race called the Oh My God 100. His gear consisted of a helmet, blue jeans, boots, and gloves. The brothers competed in a few more races before the priorities of going to college and work forced Joe to sell his dirt bike. Don't be like Joe and sell your bike!!
Once again, Joe passed on the love to ride to his sons where they too raced during their younger years. Eventually the bug to ride again bit Joe and he resumed desert racing while in his 40's. Competing in the New Mexico Desert Racing Series and the National Hare and Hound series before a back injury changed his outlook to just ride for the enjoyment.
Nowadays, Joe and his family live in California where riding dirt bikes can encompass both the mountains and the desert. Much like in New Mexico but different mountains and desert. He enjoys riding more for the scenery of new landscapes and camaraderie of good people. He's found this type of riding through dual sport events held across California.
By founding Jemez Mountain Retreats and Adventures it is Joe's hope to share his love of riding and the beauty of the Jemez mountains by offering tours and a variety of adventures of the area to who ever enjoys being outdoors.
